IĘDZYNARODOWA Letnia Szkoła Kaligrafii od ponad dekady gromadzi miłośników pięknego pisania z różnych zakątków świata - nauczyciele kaligrafii przyjeżdżali do nas na przestrzeni lat z Niemiec, Francji, Iranu i Kanady, podobnież uczniowie z wielu kontynentów zjeżdżali się do tego starego opactwa pielęgnować tę szlachetną sztukę. W tym roku Letnia Szkoła Kaligrafii odbywa się po raz trzynasty, natomiast po raz ósmy w ponorbertańskim klasztorze w zakolu Wisły na na północ od Krakowa. 

Ani opis dnia, ani żadne zdjęcia nie oddadzą rzeczywistego klimatu wakacyjnych spotkań z kaligrafią. Niektórzy uczestnicy przyjeżdżają na Letnią Szkołę od kilku lat, niektórzy wyjeżdżając z Hebdowa jadą od razu na Letnią Szkołę w Wigrach. Kurs teoretycznie trwa 30 h przez tydzień, ale uczymy się bez przerwy, obserwując weteranów, czyli wielokrotnych uczestników, innych nauczycieli, spędzając także czas rekreacji na przyjemnym trenowaniu liter. Spotkania wieczorne potrafią przedłużyć się, a skryptoria nie pustoszeją nawet po północy. Samo miejsce naszych warsztatów idealnie sprzyja skupieniu i pracy twórczej, bowiem hebdowskie opactwo przez wieki gromadziło manuskrypty, a norbertanie zajmowali się ich przepisywaniem. Dzisiaj w tej aurze dzięki wspaniałym warunkom stworzonym przez kompetentną obsługę hotelu i załogę hotelowej restauracji możemy się w pełni oddać pasji.

• Julia Bangert - kurs kaligraficzno-iluminatorski "From Word to Gold: Creating an Illuminated Manuscript Page" (język angielski)

  This workshop invites you to immerse yourself in the craft of the Middle Ages and to create one richly illuminated manuscript page from start to finish. Focusing on one page allows us to work with great care and depth: step by step, we progress from the general layout to the smallest painted detail, based on historical practices.

  What We Will Work On

  Page Composition
  We will begin by studying medieval page layouts—margins, text blocks, balance, and visual rhythm—and apply these principles to the design of your own page.

  Blackletter Script
  You will practice writing blackletter with an emphasis on proportion, rhythm, and consistency, developing a controlled hand and an understanding of how script shapes the character of the page.

  Gilding with Gold Leaf
  You will learn the traditional preparation for gilding with genuine gold leaf, its careful application, and the burnishing techniques that create a rich, luminous surface.

  Illuminated Initial and Vine Ornament
  From structure to fine detail, you will design and paint an illuminated initial with leaf tendril decoration, building layers of color and line with clarity and care.

  A Finished Manuscript Page
  All elements of the workshop lead toward the completion of one fully realized manuscript page in medieval style.

  This workshop is slow, focused, and deeply rewarding.

  Working on a single page allows for concentration, refinement, and a deep understanding of traditional techniques. By the end of the week, you will hold in your hands not just a page, but a timeless object—crafted with patience, skill, and devotion to the medieval art of book illumination.

• Grzegorz Barasiński - kurs kaligraficzno-iluminatorski (język polski i angielski).

  Pierwszy tydzień poświęcimy stylowi copperplate, który potraktujemy bardziej jako technikę pisania, dlatego też będziemy zająć się wedle koncepcji pracy końcowej alfabetem łacińskim, greckim albo fikcyjnym jak tengwy Tolkienowskie. Ponieważ Copperplate powstał w czasach zmierzchu sztuki iluminatorskiej i właściwie został zaplanowany jako pismo codziennego użytku, nie zaś książkowe, do którego należałoby dokładać iluminowany inicjał, spróbujemy współcześnie wymyślić optymalne inicjały do tych liter oraz pasujące zdobnictwo do liter. Ale uwaga, tym razem nie będą to tylko ptaszki, pióra i esy-floresy, taką floraturę potraktujemy jako rozgrzewkę przed śniadaniem.

  Po ubiegłorocznej podróży śladem "Splendoru Dwornego Pióra" – pism związanych z kulturowymi i politycznymi ośrodkami średniowiecznej i renesansowej Europy – nadszedł czas, by zejść głębiej. Tym razem skupimy się nie na dworach, lecz na źródle samej doskonałości pisma: traktatach wielkich mistrzów kaligrafii. Ten pięciodniowy warsztat to praktyczne studium Fundamentu i Reguły rządzących pięknym pismem od czasów włoskiego renesansu po współczesność. Inspiracją naszych wzorników będą instrukcje takich mistrzów jak Giovanni Tagliente, Gerhard Mercator, Johann Neudorffer, Wolfgang Fugger, Peter Stoy, Michael Baurenfeind czy Jan van der Velde, a także wielkich kontynuatorów europejskiej tradycji pismienniczej – Rudolfa Kocha czy Hermanna Zapfa. Zanurzymy się w historyczne traktaty, aby zrozumieć, dlaczego te systemy pisma – od codzinnych pism kursywnych, przez pełne elegancji i lekkości style kancelaryjne do monumentalnej fraktury są tak ponadczasowe. Odkryjemy, jak reguły proporcji, geometrii i budowy litery, ustanowione przez dawnych mistrzów stanowią nieprzemijający fundament dla każdego, kto chce opanować kunszt pióra.
  Na potrzeby warsztatów zapewniamy uczestnikom bogate materiały szkoleniowe i źródłowe w postaci szczegółowych wzorników i reprodukcji fragmentów historycznych traktatów. Każdy omawiany styl pisma będzie uzupełniony o fascynujące opowieści z biografii mistrzów, co pozwoli osadzić ich dzieła w kontekście epoki. Wskazówki prowadzącego i indywidualne podejście pozwolą nawet osobom stawiającym pierwsze kroki w sztuce kaligrafii zrozumieć i opanować złożone reguły kaligraficzne. Skupienie na Fundamencie i Regule zagwarantuje Wam solidną podstawę dla dalszego rozwoju.

• Grzegorz Barasiński - kurs kaligraficzno-iluminatorski (język polski i angielski).

  Główną inspiracją naszych zajęć będzie XII-wieczny Ewangelistarz Pasawski (Passauer Evangelistar – BSB Clm 16002, sygn. Cim. 162). Choć objętościowo niewielki, gdyż składa się z zaledwie 44 kart, stanowi nieprzebraną skarbnicę wzorów: licznych inicjałów, a także kapitały rustykalnej, późnej uncjały oraz minuskuły karolińskiej. Manuskrypt ten odbiega od utartych schematów i tradycyjnych abrewiatur, wyróżniając się wieloma oryginalnymi rozwiązaniami. Lekkość oraz żywość iluminowanej fauny i flory, z dominującą w tle jasną ultramaryną, zwiastują nadejście kolejnej epoki.
  Celem tygodniowych warsztatów będzie stworzenie stronicy w oryginalnym formacie (32,5 x 22,5 cm), rozkładówki lub „tryptyku” książkowego – kreatywność uczestników często bowiem wykracza poza tradycyjne myślenie o książce. Projekt będzie łączył kilka krojów pisma z motywem iluminatorskim (inicjałem lub całostronicową miniaturą).
  Uczestnicy powinni przygotować własną koncepcję tekstu (może to być kopia oryginału, wybrany passus z Biblii, modlitwa lub utwór literacki). Doświadczenie w kaligrafii czy malarstwie nie jest wymagane – ćwiczenia wprowadzające w techniki malowania, złocenia i pisania przygotują każdego do stworzenia własnego dzieła.

Warunki uczestnictwa i zgłoszenia

Great minds... write alike!

HE previous motto of the Summer School of Calligraphy and Manuscript Illumination was Scribere aude! – a final encouragement to do something interesting, developing, and consoling. We hope to gather again in this magnificent cloister to spend time writing and ruminating on important words. One of our previous mottoes stated that "nobody can enter the scriptorium without broad repercussions." We warn you: taking part in the Summer School means joining a group of the most creative and inspiring Vita sine litteris mors est et hominis vivi sepultura means that life without letters is death and a tomb for a living man. However, the word litteris incorporates much more than just calligraphy; it refers to the avoidance of a "hand-to-mouth" existence devoid of books, literature, and intellectual growth. Calligraphy is a deeply humanistic realm that helps us become better human beings.

• Grzegorz Barasiński - Calligraphy and Manuscript Illumination Course.

  During the first week, we will focus on the Copperplate style, treating it primarily as a writing technique. Depending on the concept of the final project, we will work with the Latin or Greek alphabet, or even fictional scripts like Tolkien’s Tengwar.

   

  Since Copperplate emerged during the decline of traditional illumination and was originally designed for everyday use rather than as a book hand requiring illuminated initials, we will attempt to contemporary design optimal initials and matching ornamentation for these letters. But be warned: this time it won’t just be simple flourishes and 'birds' – we will treat such basic ornamentation merely as a warm-up before breakfast.

Week 2 (from Sunday to Saturday - 5-11 July 2026)

• Daniel Dostal aka Signum et Imago - Calligraphy Course: Foundation and Rule. Insights from the Treatises of Old Masters. (Polish)

  Following last year's journey through the 'Splendour of the Courtly Pen' – scripts associated with the cultural and political centers of Medieval and Renaissance Europe – it is time to go deeper. This time, we will focus not on the courts, but on the very source of writing perfection: the treatises of the great masters of calligraphy.

   

  This five-day workshop is a practical study of the 'Foundation and Rule' governing beautiful writing from the Italian Renaissance to the present day. Our guides will be the instructions of masters such as Giovanni Tagliente, Gerhard Mercator, Johann Neudorffer, Wolfgang Fugger, Peter Stoy, Michael Baurenfeind, and Jan van der Velde, as well as the great continuators of the European tradition – Rudolf Koch and Hermann Zapf.

   

  We will immerse ourselves in historical treatises to understand why these writing systems – from everyday cursive scripts and elegant, light chancery styles to monumental Fraktur – remain so timeless. We will discover how the rules of proportion, geometry, and letter construction established by the old masters provide an enduring foundation for anyone wishing to master the craft of the pen.

   

  For the workshop, we provide participants with extensive training materials and source reproductions, including detailed exemplars from historical treatises. Each script discussed will be enriched with fascinating stories from the masters' biographies, placing their work in a historical context. The tutor's guidance and individual approach will allow even those taking their first steps in calligraphy to understand and master complex rules. Focusing on the 'Foundation and Rule' will guarantee a solid basis for your further development.

• Grzegorz Barasiński - Calligraphy and Manuscript Illumination Course.

  The primary inspiration for our classes will be the 12th-century Passau Evangelistary (Passauer Evangelistar – BSB Clm 16002, also known as Cim. 162). Although small in volume, consisting of only 44 folios, it is an inexhaustible treasury of ideas and patterns. It features a vast array of initials, as well as small caps, rustic capitals, late Uncial, and Carolingian minuscule. The manuscript deviates from conventional letterforms and traditional abbreviations, standing out with many original solutions. Furthermore, the lightness and vibrancy of the illuminated flora and fauna, set against a dominant bright ultramarine background, foreshadows the aesthetics of the coming era.

   

  The objective of this week-long workshop will be to create a manuscript page in its original size (32.5 x 22.5 cm). Participants may also opt for a double-page spread or a book "triptych," as our students' creativity often challenges traditional concepts of the book. The project will incorporate several scripts and an illumination motif (either an initial or a full-page miniature).

   

  Participants are encouraged to arrive with an idea for their text—whether they choose to copy the original content or select a different meaningful Bible passage, prayer, or literary piece. No prior experience in calligraphy or painting is required. Introductory exercises in painting, gilding, and calligraphy will provide all the necessary skills for participants to create their own masterpiece.

Everyone who loves manuscripts, medieval art, calligraphy, manuscript illumination or any related arts used in making handwritten books, is invited to Hebdów, where we will turn the cool chambers of the former Norbertine monastery into a huge scriptorium. The acknowledged tutors will teach small groups of aspiring calligraphers and illuminators, beginners as well as advanced learners. Over a week the participants will have the opportunity to take part in 30 hours of lectures, workshops and demonstrations, which will culminate in a final project. The hard-working week will end with a vernissage on the 3^rd and 10^th of July 2026.

How can I get to Hebdów?

Hebdów is a village near the town Nowe Brzesko. If you need to get to the hotel, look for the connection to Nowe Brzesko. You may use https://www.e-podroznik.pl or post a question on the FB event site - someone might pick you up and we know that it frequently happens - calligraphy students are so willing to help.

What calligraphy materials shall I take with?

You needn't take any materials with but the favourite ones you always use while writing. We provide ink, paper as well as penholders with nibs. Additionally, there's always a hand-held calligraphy shop where you can purchase different items and take them home.

Is it possible to purchase calligraphy equipment during the Summer School School?

Yes, if you would like to buy some new calligraphy stuff, there will a calligraphy booth of the Calligrapher's Shop. You can also place an order and pick it in Hebdów.

When do we start, when do we finish?

Generally, we gather on Sunday, we leave on Saturday after breakfast. The workshop is from Monday to Friday, so Sunday is a calm day to safely arrive to Hebdów.
